The purpose of this message is to make you aware about the various fraudulent procedures adopted by rogue recruiters / employers, and that you should be wary of applying to jobs which do not follow the standard recruitment procedure.
What is Recruitment Fraud?
The rogue recruiter / employer establishes a counterfeit web site featuring an oil and gas company’s name, logo and certain contact information, with the intention of attracting internet users to the web site and get them to submit personal information on the recruiting web page or call a bogus contact number, which will result in the caller receiving excessive long-distance charges. They will send emails on behalf of the oil and gas company, with a request to the recipient to reply with an email containing personal information or to log onto a counterfeit web site and submit personal information.
Another way is sending emails purporting to be from independent recruiters asking to fill a questionnaire. This will be followed by a job offer letter and a request for payment of money in order to secure a position with the oil and gas company or to cover travel expenses or visa fees. Such recruiters are fraudulent and will leave no trace after they have received the money from the unsuspecting job applicant.
How to protect against Recruitment Fraud?
Under the standard recruitment procedure:-
- A genuine company will never make a job offer without an interview (phone or face2face).
- It will never ask for any money from any job applicant.
- Applicants are never asked to pay for travel, immigration or other fees or expenses.
- A genuine company will never request copies of passports, driver's licenses, credit cards or other forms of personal identification by email.
Thus, if you come across any recruiter or employer asking for visa fees, passport details or making a job offer without an interview, the best way is to ignore their e-mails and mark them as SPAM.
